Could you be the next King or Queen of the Tumble?
Wales and the South Wales Valleys are well known for their spectacular cycling hills and climbs, and now this is your opportunity to be the next king or queen of one of the most famous of our climbs, the Tumble. A new initiative from Torfaen County Borough Council is challenging you to Tackle the Tumble with our Tumble Challenge.
The Tumble is an iconic cycling climb surrounded by glorious valley views and takes you from Govilon, Abergavenny towards the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. At 6km in length and with a 10% incline it’s all about slow and steady to summit the Blorenge.
And we’re setting you a challenge as part the Year of Adventure here in Wales. Why not come and visit us for a weekend and try to get yourself up on the Tumble climb leader board.
To help any keen cyclists to arrange their trip to the area a handy itinerary has been put together, including tips on potential cycling routes of various lengths (all taking in the Tumble) links to bike friendly accommodation, and links to the climb leader board.
The famous Tumble climb has featured in many an event over the years including the Tour of Britain and was a part of the first Velothon Wales last year. If you’ve already entered in the Velothon, then this is the perfect opportunity to visit the area on a training weekend and get a head start from all your competitors.
The Tumble Challenge project is funded by the Welsh Government through Visit Wales’ Regional Tourism Engagement Fund. The project is led by Torfaen County Borough Council on behalf of the Blaenavon Marketing Partnership.
Andrew Peacock, Sport & Challenging Activity Coordinator for Torfaen council, says: "We are blessed to have some of the most challenging and beautiful road cycling climbs in the area. The Tumble, is one of the most popular climbs in Wales for cyclists looking for a challenge. At 6km long at an average of nearly 10% gradient, it is renowned even by professional riders as a tough climb. But it's fun, whether you try to get up there as fast as you can or take your time and admire the stunning scenery over the national park. This is a great opportunity to encourage cyclists to visit Blaenavon World Heritage Site and the surrounding area.
Our accommodation providers are cyclist friendly and we’ve put together a great itinerary for cyclists of all abilities to try out."
Now’s the opportunity to enjoy a cycling weekend here in the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and challenge yourself to be king or queen of the Tumble. For more information head to www.visitblaenavon.co.uk/TackletheTumble and plan your cycling weekend away and Tackle the Tumble.
