The great Outdoors
The distinctive landscape around Blaenavon was created by the combined forces of nature and man. The deep valleys were created by glaciers and fast flowing rivers, whilst quarries and mines have penetrated the landscape. As these cut into the land, the spoil (waste) had to be deposited. This area has some early Spoil Heaps which are of great interest to industrial archaeologists. Some of the reminders of the area’s industrial past have been reclaimed, creating new habitats for native species – such as at Garn Lakes and on the short walk around Coity Tip.
This rugged landscape is truly inspirational; a great place for sketching or photography, or for nature watching. The area has everything from Red Grouse and nesting Peregrines, to Lesser Horseshoe bats and beautiful Beech woodlands. Talks and courses are held throughout the year to help you really get the best from the landscape. So take your time and a picnic and get out and explore the natural assets of the Blaenavon World Heritage Site.
