Blaenavon Heritage Town
Broad Street, originally known as ‘Heol y Nant’ (Stream Street), was once the bustling retail heart of Blaenavon. During the Victorian age, its many shops and businesses supplied all the needs of an ever growing number of ironworkers, coalminers and their families. As the coal and steel industries declined during the 20th century, people moved away from Blaenavon to find work, so many traditional businesses closed.
Since World Heritage Site status was achieved, considerable work has gone into rejuvenating the area and now as you wander around you will find a range of individual craft and book shops, as well as unique food shops (such as The Blaenafon Cheese Company| and Chocs Away|) and traditional shops like butchers and greengrocers. So whilst you walk around, pick up some fresh food for your picnic – maybe enjoying the views across the church yard outside the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre|.
