Annual Lecture at Big Pit National Coal Museum

Sian James, former MP for Swansea East and featured in the film Pride, will be presenting Big Pit’s Annual Lecture, Activism Achieves,on Saturday 16th April at 1.30pm.

As a young mother, Siân became involved in the family support networks surrounding the 1984/5 Miners’ Strike. At the end of the strike Siân enrolled in the Welsh Department of Swansea University and after graduating worked in press and public relations for some of the most well- known organizations and companies in Wales.

In 2005 Sian was elected as MP, the first woman to represent Swansea East, until she stood down in 2015.

Siân said: "Activism Achieves - getting stuck in really works and has certainly helped changed my life and the lives of others in Wales. I believe ‘activism’ is a habit that can be formed at a very young age. It can be nurtured and grown into other forms of activism, it is addictive and can ultimately be ‘catching’. I want as many people as possible to be infected, I want them to get into the habit of speaking out, standing up and organising campaigns that will help them change their lives and communities."

The annual lecture is FREE, no pre- booking necessary.
