No fire from this Dragon, just clean energy…..!

A new hydro-turbine in Blaenavon called the Dragon's Teeth began trials at the end of September last year. The system is intended to generate electricity for the World Heritage Centre and increase revenue for the conservation and volunteer programmes of the Forgotten Landscapes Scheme.

The turbine, funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, the Welsh Government and Brecon Beacons National Park, is estimated to produce 150kW a year – enough energy to feed 23 average UK households and save 53 tons of CO2 emission.  It will help power the World Heritage Centre, saving an estimated £8.000 yearly and bring in an estimated £20,000 that will go towards conservation and volunteer programmes.

According to scheme manager Steven Rogers, "this is the first step in our intention to be able to manage, maintain and promote the World Heritage Site without being fully dependent on grant aid".
