Party in the Past

On Sunday 12th September, celebrate ten years of Blaenavon’s World Heritage Site status with a spectacular open air concert and firework display at Blaenavon Ironworks, hosted by Tim Rhys-Evans. Set in the very heart of the World Heritage Site, you will enjoy a fabulous evening of Welsh music, with performances by:

Tim Rhys-Evans – Music Director of ‘Only Men Aloud’, a classically trained singer and former musical director of the Welsh National Youth Opera. ‘Only Men Aloud’ was started by Tim Rhys-Evans in 2000. This exciting young male voice choir tackled music not usually preferred by traditional Male Voice Choirs. 10 years on Only Men Aloud are still thriving after winning the title ‘Britain’s Favourite Choir’, the choir released 2 albums, the first went gold in the first week and the second went straight to the top of the classical charts and won a Classical Brit Award for best album 2009.

Sophie Evans - Runner up on BBC’s reality show ‘Over the Rainbow’. Sophie will be Dorothy in the West End production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the London Palladium starting next year.

Only Boys Aloud – Started by its father company, Only Men Aloud, to encourage singing among men across the South Wales Valleys. The first mayor gig for the massed forces of Only Boys Aloud was televised at the opening at the National Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale and saw 150 14-19 year olds join forces with ‘Only Men Aloud’ to make a massive impact with three standing ovations.

The Three Welsh Tenors – Rhys Meirion, Aled Hall and Alun Rhys-Jenkins. The three first came together to sing as a trio for the ‘Celtfest’ extravaganza in Cardiff. All are professional tenors with solo careers in their own right. Forthcoming plans include BBC Proms in the Park in Swansea, TV appearances on S4C and other concerts.

Blaenavon Male Voice Choir – The choir was founded in 1910 and has enjoyed national and international success, travelling the globe and representing their town and country. The choir still boasts a strong membership; they are currently celebrating their one hundredth anniversary and look forward to keeping Blaenavon’s musical tradition alive for another century!

Blaenavon Town Band - With the Band’s long history as the Colliery Workmen’s Band it is proud of its cultural heritage and association with the mining industry of the town, but is equally as proud to be an organisation which will be part of the future of the town. They are delighted to be able to take part in the events to celebrate ten years of World Heritage Status.

Blaenavon Gamelan – Based on Indonesian culture, the Gamelan is fabricated from recycled metal sourced from the area - including ‘bells’ crafted from gas cylinders, old pipes, bits of railway lines and discarded tools. The objects have been cut to size, tuned, decorated and transformed into instruments.

This is an event not to be missed!
