Pet owners advised to act responsibly when walking near livestock

With the evenings getting lighter and Spring on the way, walkers are making the most of the beautiful landscape in Torfaen.

The council would like to remind pet owners to follow the Countryside Code when out walking, and respect the land they are walking on. A lot of the land on circular walks is private even though it may have a footpath or right of way.

For those who go walking with a pet, we would like to remind owners to keep dogs on leads at all times when walking near livestock.

Livestock, particularly sheep, can be panicked by dogs going to chase them, which can cause them both stress and physical harm. They can be especially vulnerable during lambing season.

Sheep worrying is an offence, and anyone with any information on sheep worrying should contact Gwent Police by calling 101.

Parasites found in some dog faeces can also cause harm to livestock, and as such the council would again remind residents to ensure any dog waste is picked up and disposed of responsibly when walking near local farms.
