Blaenavon World Heritage Environment Group

Enthusiastic about our World Heritage Site landscape, its wildlife and history? Enjoy being outdoors? Interested in joining in with practical activities with like-minded people – and having a bit of fun?

If this is describes you then joining the Blaenavon World Heritage Environment Group (BWHEG) might be just the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

This community group is made up of people who care passionately about everything the landscape has to offer, whether that’s unique wildlife, interesting archaeology, dry stone walls or unique wildlife. A variety of regular tasks that help to conserve, enhance and promote the precious natural and cultural heritage of the area are carried out.

Blaenavon Heritage Railway

Located in the heart of the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, Blaenavon Heritage Railway boasts four stations with the main station, café and sidings at Furnace Sidings. From here the trains head north to the Whistle Inn, South to Blaenavon High Level Station and across to the Big Pit Halt, which is next to the Big Pit National Coal Museum.

Blaenavon Heritage Railway are always looking for volunteers. There is a wide range of opportunities to suit all ages and skills. Some roles are operational - working on the train as loco crew or as a guard or ticket inspector. Other roles are on the station as station master or booking clerk, while the refreshment room offers possibilities for people who are interested in catering.

We also need people who enjoy engineering or other maintenance tasks on locos or carriages and wagons; in addition we have a civil engineering section who build structures and maintain buildings.
