Travel by Coach

The Blaenavon World Heritage Site is an ideal destination for a day trip, especially if you and your group are travelling within a two hour drive time. If travelling from further a field, you may consider staying with one of the group accommodation providers to allow sufficient time to fully appreciate Blaenavon’s numerous attractions.

Blaenavon enjoys good road links with all major towns and cities in England and Wales. Use the table below for some indication on how long it will take your coach party to reach Blaenavon.

Travelling from Birmingham and the north of Britain take the M5 South. Leave at Junction 8 and continue on the M50 to Ross on Wye. Take the A40 to Abergavenny. At the roundabout take the second exit onto the A465. Leave the A465 at the first exit and follow the signs to Blaenavon and Big Pit. This route is unsuitable for large vehicles and coaches, so these vehicles should continue on A465 to Brynmawr and pick up the signs to Blaenavon and Big Pit from there (B4248).

Travelling from London and the south west of England take the M4 West and leave at Junction 25A (Newport). Take the A4042 as far as Pontypool. At the (McDonalds) roundabout take the first exit and follow the A4043 to Blaenavon, following the Big Pit signs.

Coach Parking in Blaenavon

Coach parking is available at both Big Pit and the Ironworks. Whilst there are currently no dedicated coach parking bays in the town centre, a coach drop off space can be found in the World Heritage Centre car park on Church Road and spaces for smaller (30 seater) coaches are available in Prince Street Car Park. Both are within a short walking distance of the town. Coach parking is also available at Rifle Green Car Park, opposite the Rifleman’s Hotel.

Please be advised that there are some vehicle restrictions in the area:

  • B4246 Llanfoist to Blaenavon – Weight Limit 7.5 tons
  • B4246 Blaenavon to Varteg – Bridge Height 13ft 9in
  • Minor road from B4246 to Pwll Du – no access to coaches beyond the Lamb and Fox Inn
