Blaenavon's historic parish church, St. Peter's, is the earliest industrial church in old Monmouthshire. It contains a number of interesting features, which bear witness to the importance of the iron industry in the area.

Amongst the many unique features which can be seen are a cast iron baptismal font, cast iron pillars supporting the balcony, cast iron door sills and a group of five iron-topped tombs in the graveyard. Around the walls of the church the memorial plaques of prominent Blaenavon citizens can be seen, including that of the ironmaster Samuel Hopkins, who, with his uncle and business partner, Thomas Hill of Dennis, built the church in 1804.

If the church is closed when you visit, a key may be obtained from the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre. More information about Blaenavon’s churches and chapels, including local parish records, are available at the World Heritage Centre and at the Cordell and Community Heritage Museum in Lion Street.
