Industry & Ale

The link between industry and ale stretches back to the industrial revolution (when beer was better for you than water) – so this is an ideal combination for a day out in Blaenavon World Heritage Site.

  • Arrive at the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre. Find out about the role that the area played in the Industrial Revolution during the 19th Century.
  • Take a short walk up to the Blaenavon Ironworks. Built in 1789, you can explore the extensive remains and workers cottages, and experience the sights and sounds of the Ironworks in its heyday.
  • Either take a short drive or a 20 minute walk to the Big Pit National Coal Museum. Venture underground and experience what it was like to be a miner.
  • Next door to the Big Pit is Rhymney Brewery & Visitor Centre. Discover the history of Real Ale in the South Wales Valleys, and watch the brewing process. Don’t leave until you’ve sampled some of the award winning ales.
