4. Hill Pits

A mine sunk in the 1830’s to extract iron ore and coal for the Blaenavon Ironworks. The beautifully crafted stone stack you see before you was once the chimney for the pit’s steam driven winding engine. At this point you might like to take a short detour to find the remains of a ruined farmhouse approximately 150m due east of hill pits.
