Iron Mountain Trail

An 18km (12 mile) circular walk taking you around the Blorenge Mountain. The walk, incorporating former tram roads and the canal, encompasses the wealth of historical and natural features, which give the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape its unique identity.

You can do it as one single route or it can be split into two. Separate walks leaflets for the Iron Mountain Trail Part One and the Iron Mountain Trail Part Two both of which begin at the Keeper’s Pond Car Park [SO 254 197].

Part One – Moderate to energetic 11.5km (7mile) circular walk (approx: 4.5hrs)

Part Two – Moderate to energetic 8km (5mile) circular walk (approx 3.5hrs)

The Mynydd y Garn-Fawr

A heather-clad mountain walk between the Foxhunter Memorial and Llanover Road, passing Bronze Age burial cairns, providing evidence of Blaenavon’s early inhabitants.

Start at Keeper’s Pond Car Park [SO 254 197].

Carn-y-Gorfydd

This circular walk takes you through a Site of Special Scientific Interest with an abundance of wildlife, including redstarts, pied flycatchers and the green woodpecker. In springtime, you will see violets and oxalis or wood sorrel with its delicate white flowers and gently folded trefoil leaves. You will also find bluebells, campion and white stitchwort. It is a great walk for wildlife lovers!

Start at Carn-y-Gorfydd (Cairn of the Battle) [SO 270 10).

Goytre Wharf to Blaenavon Landscape

This walk takes in a variety of landscapes from woodlands and meadows to open mountain as well as the canal. It has been divided into six stages or ‘legs’ for ease of use.

It should only be attempted when the weather is good. For you own safety make sure you are properly equipped with warm and waterproof clothing. Walking boots are essential for this walk. It is recommended you take a good quality map and compass.
