8. John Paton

This is the gravestone of John Paton, who served as General Manager of the Blaenavon Iron and Coal Company from 1863 to 1874. John Paton was educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities and held various positions at ironworks in England before taking up position in Blaenavon. As General Manager, Mr Paton was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of the company on behalf of the directors. He lived at Park House, which was the home of successive General Managers of the Blaenavon Company. He was a popular man among the workers, supporting local charities, political freedom, friendly societies and good relations between the workers and their employers.
