12. War Graves

St. Peter’s Churchyard contains the graves of seven war graves associated with the First and Second World Wars. Look for the war grave, bearing the name of Private Idris Jones.

Idris Jones

Private Idris Jones, of Broad Street, joined the South Wales Borderers in March 1916 and served in France during the First World War. Unfortunately, he suffered from numerous medical problems during his military service and returned to Britain to recuperate. After an operation to treat gastritis at Nottingham General Hospital, Idris Jones died on 3 August 1918, shortly before the end of the war. His body was returned to his relatives and he was buried at St. Peter’s Churchyard.

Also, buried within the churchyard, in unmarked graves, are veterans of earlier conflicts, including Samuel Jones who was at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and William Osborne who fought at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879.

Head back towards the church, along the same path. On returning to the intersection, turn left and walk to the back of the church.
