9. Forgeside
You are entering Forgeside. A new ironworks forge at Forgeside started construction in 1838 but was delayed by a lack of resources. The first part of the works to be finished was the forge itself in 1859 and then a mill followed in 1860. The final furnaces were operational by 1861, 21 years after construction started. The forge is where the method of converting pig iron made from phosphoric ore into basic steel pioneered by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas was used. The site was linked by an extensive network of railways and tram roads transporting raw and finished products to and from the forge.
