4. Reed Beds

You will see the Reed Beds ahead of you. In 2002 the Coal Authority constructed some reed beds to treat the iron ochre flowing from former mine workings in the area. Reed beds are the most ecologically friendly way of treating mine water. They provide a visually attractive solution to the mine water problem brought about by years of coal mining; preventing iron ochre lowering the ecological diversity of rivers.
