Diwylliant y dafarn a chymdeithasau cyfeillgar

Ar ddiwedd y 19eg ganrif, roedd bron i 60 o dafarndai ym Mlaenafon. Roedd nifer ohonynt i’w gweld yn King Street a Broad Street. Ymhlith y mwyaf oedd y White Horse, y Red Lion, y Market Tavern a’r Castle. Roedd rhai tafarndai’n gysylltiedig ag yfed trwm, gamblo a thrais ond roedd eraill yn fannau lle cynhaliwyd gweithgareddau ‘parchus’. Byddai tafarndai’n cynnal darlithoedd, adloniant cerddorol a dramâu amatur! Roeddent hefyd yn gartref i gyfarfodydd gwleidyddol a chyfarfodydd undeb llafur, lle byddai’r gweithwyr yn cwrdd i drafod eu hawliau.

Roedd cymdeithasau cyfeillgar y dref hefyd yn cwrdd mewn tafarndai. Roedd y clybiau hyn yn cynnig buddion a chefnogaeth i’w haelodau mewn cyfnodau o galedi. Erbyn y 1870au, roedd dros 2,000 o bobl Blaenafon yn aelodau o gyfrinfa gymdeithas gyfeillgar. Byddai pob cymdeithas gyfeillgar yn cynnal ei gorymdaith flynyddol yng nghanol y dref. Byddai’r aelodau yn gorymdeithio drwy’r dref mewn gwisg gyda’u baneri, ac fel arfer yn cael eu harwain gan fand. Yna byddent yn cynnal gwasanaeth crefyddol mewn capel i’w ddilyn gan ginio mewn tŷ tafarn lle byddent yn mwynhau cerddoriaeth ac areithiau.

All ye who love a social drop
Come in and sit you down
For here you’ll find as good a tap
As any in the Town,
And as ye are on pleasure bent,
And love good wholesome cheer
Come in and see our friend Vincent
And taste his home brewed beer
